Narrow car seats: fitting three across

Narrow car seats: 44 cm at best on the datasheets checked, 132 cm for three across, the cars listed by ADAC and the Belgian legal exception.

A narrow car seat is 44 cm wide at best, going by the high-back booster datasheets we checked. Three across therefore need 132 cm of rear bench. Few cars offer that: ADAC, the German motoring club, lists only twelve new models, almost all of them leisure MPVs.

How wide is a narrow car seat?

44 cm, for the slimmest. An ordinary high-back booster is often over 50 cm, and the gap comes down to a few centimetres per seat, multiplied by three on the bench.

The widths come from the datasheets of the Belgian retailer Babylux, the French retailer Bambinou and Cybex's product page. I have not tested any of these seats: the figures are the manufacturers' and the shops'. The Morion, often presented as the seat for siblings, shows the trap. Two Belgian datasheets give it 49 cm, a German one 44, and neither of the two Belgian shops was still selling it that day.

Can you fit three car seats in any car?

No, and the list is shorter than you might think. On 31 July 2026, ADAC published its list of cars where three child seats fit side by side, in the second or third row, secured with Isofix or a three-point belt, backless boosters excluded. Only twelve new cars. Seven leisure MPVs (Citroën Berlingo, Ford Tourneo Connect, Opel Combo Life, Peugeot Rifter, Renault Kangoo, Toyota Proace City Verso, VW Caddy), four minibuses, and a single SUV, the Volvo XC90 plug-in hybrid.

Not one estate car.

Among used cars, the club lists 33 model series, including the VW Touran, the Renault Grand Scénic, the second-generation Peugeot 5008 and the 2019 to 2022 Citroën C5 Aircross. These lists only cover models that went through the full ADAC road test: a car that is missing is not necessarily too narrow, it may simply never have been measured.

Which narrow car seat for the middle seat?

A high-back booster secured with the belt, in most family cars, because the centre seat rarely has Isofix. ADAC notes that Isofix seats line up more easily: they shift sideways more readily, which gives the middle seat back the centimetres it lacks.

Coralie and Mehdi live near Bastogne, in the Belgian Ardennes, with three children aged 1, 4 and 7 and a 2019 compact estate. With two car seats in the back, everything was fine. The third changed everything, and it was the centre seatbelt buckle, trapped under the shell of the neighbouring seat, that made them give up on keeping their car, far more than the width itself.

On the Flex Fix 2, the BeSafe manual allows the side protection to be removed on the inner side to make room. Never on the door side.

Is a backless booster the narrowest solution?

Yes, but not for every age. Since 2017, as the Belgian daily La DH reported, a new backless booster can only be approved for children of 22 to 36 kg who are taller than 125 cm. It protects neither the head nor the chest in a side impact. In the middle, for the eldest, it is a defensible option; on an outer seat, on the door side, I would not choose it.

What does Belgian law say when three seats do not fit?

It provides an exception. When two child restraints take up the rear bench and a third cannot be fitted, a child aged at least 3 may travel in the rear with the seatbelt alone, as summarised by the Belgian payroll and family services provider Parentia. Under 3, no exception applies. The rule is federal: the same in Brussels, Wallonia and Flanders.

Legal does not mean safe: on a 1.10 m child, the diagonal strap of a belt designed for an adult runs, as a rule, across the neck. The other way out is the front passenger seat. The Belgian federal police point out that a rear-facing seat is only allowed there with the front airbag switched off.

How do I know whether three seats will fit in my car?

By measuring, then by trying. Car datasheets rarely publish the usable width of the rear bench, and when they do, it is at shoulder height, not at the cushion.

  • measure the bench at cushion level, from one door panel to the other;
  • leave room for every seatbelt buckle a hand needs to reach;
  • add up the widths on the seats' datasheets, keeping the side protection on the door sides;
  • check that the centre seat has a three-point belt, not a lap belt;
  • read in the car's handbook which positions accept a child seat;
  • take your three seats to the test drive, as ADAC advises.

For Coralie and Mehdi, the estate was traded for a used leisure MPV, tested one Saturday with the three seats in the boot. Our Kangoo or Berlingo duel looks at two cars from the list. Frequently asked questions

Among the high-back boosters whose datasheets we read on 20 October 2026, the narrowest are 44 cm: the Britax Römer Kidfix M i-Size, and the BeSafe Flex Fix 2 i-Size once its SIP+ side protection is removed on the inner side. A backless booster cushion is narrower still, but it is only suitable from 125 cm and 22 kg.

Yes, with the three-point seatbelt, if the seat's manual and the car's handbook allow it for that position. It is in fact the most common case: the centre seat in most family cars has no Isofix. Check that the centre belt is a three-point belt and that its buckle stays reachable once the two outer seats are in place.

In the ADAC list published on 31 July 2026, six new cars: Citroën Berlingo, Citroën SpaceTourer, Opel Combo Life, Opel Zafira Life, Peugeot Rifter and Toyota Proace City Verso. Among used cars, ADAC mentions the second-generation Peugeot 5008, the Renault Espace V, the VW Touran and the VW Sharan.

Rarely. No city car or compact hatchback appears in the ADAC list, which only covers models that went through its full road test. In a small car, the most realistic option is to combine two narrow seats with a backless booster for a child over 125 cm, provided the centre buckle stays within reach.

Yes, provided the front passenger airbag is switched off for any rear-facing seat, and the car's handbook and the seat's manual are followed. It is often what frees the rear bench for two boosters. A rear-facing seat in front of an active airbag is forbidden.

Width is not an approval criterion, and a narrow seat is not less safe in itself. What matters are its results in the tests published by ADAC or Test-Achats, the Belgian consumer association, and following its manual. On the BeSafe Flex Fix 2, the side protection can only be removed on the inner side, never on the door side.
